When Gary Stokes is not running his restaurant in Hong Kong, he’s monitoring the illegal fish trade and the area’s marine debris. In march, 2020, he discovered something new: face masks. Soon after, his organisation OceansAsia began researching how much of the world’s face masks would end up in the sea. Their answer, according to OceansAsia’s co-founder Teale Phelps, is 1.5 billion in 2020 alone.
